Child Nutrition Reauthorization 2009 Action Center

In early 2005, leaders of key national anti-hunger organizations sounded the alarm to anti-poverty advocates about changes likely to be proposed by the Bush Administration and 2005 Congress related to the structure of the federal budget.  Fourteen months later, Congress approved a FY 2006 Budget Reconciliation Bill that made harmful cuts in Medicaid, student loans, TANF, foster care and child support enforcement.  The bill did not include cuts to the Food Stamp Program although at points during the budget debate cuts in excess of $1 billion were proposed.

As 2006 begins, another federal budget process is waiting in the wings.  On February 6, President Bush will issue his budget proposal.  In March and April, Congressional Budget Committees will work on the budget reconciliation bill that will set the parameters for domestic discretionary and entitlement spending.  Next will come the appropriations committees' work on discretionary spending and other committees' proposals for entitlement cuts.  NOTE:  the key framework of the budget is established by the Budget Committees.  This means we need to act sooner rather than later.
